After the company she worked for went into liquidation, Deborah Burke founded ROC Recruitment in 1991. Drawing on her secretarial training, she rented an office and a desk and started a secretarial staffing agency. A few years later her ex-army husband joined the business. Today they jointly manage the London company that has grown sales from just under £1m in 1994 to £5m in 1997, with 41 employees. Serving mostly blue chip clients such as Citibank and Barclays, the company competes in a tight labour market by using a computerised system that quickly matches the most suitable temporary candidates to the jobs and working overtime to find the most interesting work for candidates.
