In the hard-pressed textile sector, it is good to know that someone is prospering. Peter Stock founded Rochdale Textile Supplies in 1985 to supply the towelling grips that replace worn-out handles on squash rackets. Later it bought three fabric suppliers and today the company makes hardwearing fabric for factory overalls. The acquisitions have helped to drive up profits by 70% a year from £1.1m in 1997 to £5.4m in 2000, when the firm had 207 staff.
