In November, the Prince of Wales officially opened the Poet Laureate, the first pub in Poundbury, the Dorset model village he helped to plan. The contract to run the pub was won by RWM Food Group.
Two butchers from London’s Smithfield Market, Robin Heffer and Geoff Knight, founded the Somerset company in 1968. RWM is now a big meat wholesaler, supplying the likes of Tesco and Safeway. Heffer’s eldest son Mark runs the Poet Laureate as a gastropub, and the company plans to open more pubs in Dorset. RWM’s profits have grown 34% a year from £4m in 1998 to £9.7m in 2001.
