Ryland Group was a listed motor group until a management buyout last August. Peter Whale, chairman and grandson of Ryland’s founder, led the deal with backing from Barclays and ITC, a Barbados motor company. Ryland sells cars from 10 different manufacturers, including BMW, Bentley, Chrysler-Jeep, Jaguar, Mercedes, Rolls-Royce and Volvo. In 2002 it reported sales of £568m, but some operations have since been sold. Sales in 2003 are therefore expected to be slightly lower.
