Salmon, based in Hertfordshire, has changed shape since it appeared at No31 in last year’s league table. In June the fixed-price software provider demerged its activities into two separate companies, headed by its two former joint managing directors. Chris Harvey continues to run the company that retains the Salmon name, including the New York and Sydney offices. Julian Harris heads Smart421, which has recently opened offices in Phoenix and San Francisco. Both Salmon and Smart421 are focused on e-commerce and m-commerce, which is the use of mobile phones to browse, search and buy online. Salmon as a group has increased sales 80% a year, from £3.7m in 1996 to £21.6m in 1999, when it had 29 staff and a bank of 250 information-technology contractors.
