Salon Services, which supplies hairdressers and beauty therapists with tools and products to transform their customers, has undergone a makeover of its own since the company started buying supplies direct from manufacturers instead of through agents. Now the business is paying less for almost 5,000 products from curling tongs, hair extensions and pedicure kits to L’Oreal and Wella shampoos. The company sells through a chain of showrooms, which grew from 50 in 2000 to 73 in 2004, boosting profits 58% a year from £1.3m in 2000 to £5.3m in 2003.
