It is difficult to know whether Mary Shelley would have approved, but Saltire Taverns’ Frankenstein pubs have proved a hit with Scottish drinkers. Founded in 1996 by Billy Lowe, the company operates seven themed pubs in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow, three of which are Frankensteins. Saltire invested £1m in 1999 to refurbish its premises and sales have grown by nearly 120% a year from an annualised £687,000 in 1999 to £7.3m in 2002.
