Stephen Dear, a number-plate salesman, teamed up with one of his former customers, garage owner Tim Sanders, to found Sandhurst Autoprint in 1997. The company supplies car dealers such as Sytner and Mercedes-Benz with components and the equipment needed to make number plates. The Berkshire company has also launched a parking sensor that is attached to number plates and tells the driver how much room for manoeuvre he has. Sales grew by more than 75% a year from £600,000 in 1999 to £3.2m in 2002.
