Scot-Lad

If chicken tikka masala is Britain’s favourite dish, that adds up to a lot of chicken. Scot-Lad, which trades as Mitchells Chickens and Challenger Foods, is a fourth-generation family business that says it supplies 25,000 tonnes of poultry each year from its factories in Angus and Sunderland. The meat is bought from poultry suppliers in Scotland, and delivered to wholesalers nationwide. An acquisition and investment in machinery to double capacity have driven up profits 45% a year from £1.2m in 2000 to £3.7m in 2003.
