Searchlight Electric has been importing lamps from China since the Cultural Revolution. Founded by Sir Sidney Hamburger in 1945, his son Herzl is the current managing director, and Herzl’s two brothers, Dov and Morris, are fellow directors. The Manchester-based company sells the lamps and lighting products to department and DIY stores such as Homebase and John Lewis. Profits have grown by 42% pa, from £1.1m in 1995 to £3m in 1998. Sales in the same period have risen by 10% pa to reach £14.3m. Herzl Hamburger attributes this rise in profits to flexible sourcing of supplies and to the strength of sterling, which has allowed him to import more economically. He claims that all interest from Searchlight’s bank accounts is donated to charity.
