The company started as a single car dealership in Birmingham, but by the mid-1990s Britax was making aircraft interiors, children’s car seats and speed detectors for police and emergency vehicles. Having sold its car dealerships in 1997 the Warwick company was taken private in a £441m deal in 2001 backed by Royal Bank Equity Finance, and now concentrates on engineering. Britax reported a £65m decrease in sales to £403m in 2002 because of the troubles afflicting the world aviation industry. It had 3,978 staff at the time.
