The construction and engineering concern Shepherd Building Group is best known for the Portakabin line of quick-assembly modular buildings. More recently it has taken the concept further to create portable machine housings and even holiday homes. More traditional projects range from a hotel and waterpark for Alton Towers to London’s tallest residential block at West India Quay. Founded in 1890, the company is still owned by the Shepherd family and recorded sales of £704m in 2006 under the guidance of chairman Alan Fletcher.
