The Shepherd Building Group made a large donation to local rugby league club York City Knights this year, allowing them to take the sport into local schools. It also gave £100,000 to the York Minster fund, which is restoring the cathedral’s crumbling facade in the city where the group is based. The company, best known for making Portakabin buildings, can afford to be generous – its owners, the Shepherd family, are worth an estimated £320m. Founded in 1890, the company also carries out large construction projects and engineering work. In 2005, chairman Alan Fletcher oversaw a rise in sales to £644m, excluding joint ventures.
