You can now check yourself in at an airport or buy a train ticket from a machine supplied by Shere. Founded by Neil Briscoe and David Parson in 1993, the company got its big break two years later when it won a contract from the then British Rail to supply ticketing machines in stations across the country. Shere now claims to control two-thirds of the self-serve rail ticket machine market in Britain, with customers ranging from GNER to Virgin Trains. Sales have increased 45% a year from £2.1m in 2002 to £4.4m in 2004.
