Claiming to sell 60 pairs of shoes every minute at an average price of about £8.50, the Leicester-based company keeps bargain-hunters coming to its more than 800 stores throughout Britain and Ireland. The company has benefited from the downturn, purchasing distressed competitors Shoefayre and Stead & Simpson last year, and this year the chain is refitting 90 of its stores. Sales hit an annualised £233.2m in 2008, under chief executive Anthony Smith.
