Media consultant Tim Ewington and Mike Soutar, former editor of FHM, founded this London firm in 2007. They raised funding in two rounds from investors including Beano publisher DC Thomson, hedge fund GLG Partners and French Connection founder Stephen Marks. It now distributes 1m copies a week of men’s and women’s magazines, titled Shortlist and Stylist, in big cities. The magazines are aimed at young, affluent professionals and, significantly, they are free. Sales, derived solely from advertising, grew 86% a year, from an annualised £2.4m in 2008 to £15.3m in 2011.
