While they were still music undergraduates at Oxford and Cambridge universities, twins Ben and Jonathan Finn designed a musical software package that is becoming an industry standard. It enables composers and music teachers to write music on-screen and is used by musicians as varied as the conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the writers of the scores for hit films such as Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and Lethal Weapon.
Cambridge-based Sibelius Software, founded by the brothers in 1993, is now the largest supplier of musical notation software in Europe. Its sales grew 73% a year, from £833,000 in 1998 to £2.5m in 2000.
