Named after the Leeds street in which it began, Silver Cross is famed for its prams, known as “Bentleys for babies”, chosen by posh parents since 1877. Modern-day fans of the traditional Balmoral and Kensington baby carriages, still handmade in Yorkshire, include the actresses Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow. The company, based in Skipton, was rescued from the receivers in 2002 by David Halsall International and is chaired by Alan Halsall after a buyout in 2006. Its contemporary range includes buggies, car seats, and high chairs, designed in Britain and manufactured in China. Silver Cross’s sales have soared 148% a year from an annualised £696,000 in 2004 to £10.6m in 2007.
