Simclar Group

Stung by the downturn in demand for electronic components in 2001, Simclar Group founder and owner Sam Russell decided to restructure the business, which originally specialised in assembling printed circuit boards. The Dunfermline firm is now looking for acquisitions to diversify its interests. The latest purchase was UP Mex, a designer and manufacturer of office chairs. Simclar has had to close several unprofitable plants in the past five years. Sales have jumped from a low of £28m in 2001 to £141.8m in 2003.
