Half of this Kent company’s sales come from buying land, building houses and selling them by advertising in local newspapers and estate agencies. But since 2002, SJW Developments has driven growth by creating a bank of 150 specialists, such as plasterers and dryliners, whose skills are in short supply. By taking on projects for other builders, it has grown sales 96% a year, from £737,000 in 2001 to £5.5m in 2004. SJW was founded in 1997 by Simon Wright with £750,000 from the sale of his tool-hire company.
