The building giant Sir Robert McAlpine is returning to profit after a difficult couple of years when losses on a Private Finance Initiative project, now completed, wiped out operating profits made elsewhere. Sales were £1,092m in 2005. Based in Hemel Hempstead, the family-owned firm is chaired by David McAlpine and has renewed its emphasis on landmark building projects such as the Duchess of Northumberland’s £64m Alnwick Garden and Arsenal’s new stadium in north London, due to open this month.
