Robert McAlpine, once an apprentice bricklayer, founded this civilengineering company in Scotland in 1869. Celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, it is still owned by the McAlpine family and has completed landmark projects such as the Olympic stadium in London. It built the retractable roof at Wimbledon’s No 1 Court and is replacing the Victorian-era heating system at the Royal Albert Hall. Sales at its holding company, which includes a property arm, hit £871m in 2018. The firm is led by chief executive Paul Hamer, 50.
