Founded in 1869 in Scotland, this civil engineering and building company has helped deliver many landmark developments, including Birmingham’s Bullring, the Eden Project and the main stadium for the 2012 Olympics. Current projects include the American Embassy in London, and Bloomberg’s new headquarters. The company attributed a loss of £84.3m in 2014 to one difficult project, but following a review and restructuring of its business, so far in 2015 it has won contracts totalling more than £600m. Headquartered in Hertfordshire, the business remains under the ownership of the McAlpine family.
