With sales of £6.7m in 1997, S&J (Chatteris), a 25-year old family business, appears again on the league table. The Cambridgeshire-based company’s main activities include roofing, cladding, and mainstream contracting in the South East. As the company secures more contracts, its biggest challenge is getting paid, says managing director, Mark Langley. Often operating as a sub-contractor, Langley says large national contractors often withhold payment if they suspect the subcontractor might go under. Many do fail as a result of not getting paid promptly, he adds, and the main contractor skips off scott-free. Chatteris has financed growth internally and is in the process of moving to new premises.
