This peer-to-peer betting site allows punters to set their own odds on sports events, politics and current affairs. Its chief executive, Jason Trost, 35, started the company in 2008 in an attempt to undercut traditional bookmakers by applying financial trading principles to sports betting. Since then, more than £3bn has swapped hands on its exchange, helping sales grow to £10.4m in 2015. Smarkets has raised £2.5m from investors and is now reportedly considering a stock market flotation in New York.
