More than 80,000 people have downloaded the app for Smarter’s wifi-connected kettle since it launched in 2013. Sales on its website, on Amazon, and through the likes of John Lewis, Currys and Selfridges grew to £2m this year. This autumn Smarter will launch fridge cameras and cupboard weighing mats, which it says will help consumers avoid over-buying whilst shopping. Inventor Christian Lane, 29, runs the London firm with his wife and brother. His previous idea – a curved folder – won investment from Theo Paphitis after a pitch on the BBC’s Dragons’ Den, and became a best-seller in WH Smith and Staples.
