Multiyork, the upmarket Norfolk-based furniture maker and retailer founded by Charles and Jo Pugh in the early 1980s, went into receivership and was sold off cheaply to new owners in 1995. After retiring to Guernsey to ‘lick their wounds’, the Pughs returned to the fray in 1996. Sofas-UK, the company they founded in South Wales with their own money, now has a chain of seven factory showrooms in the affluent south of England, from London to Reading and Bristol. It claims to offer trade prices direct to the public and has boosted its sales 149% a year from £274,000 in 1998 to £4.2m in 2001, when the company employed 41 people.
