Since appearing on last year’s league table, Software Warehouse, has hardly rested on its laurels. The Birmingham-based computer reseller has moved into a new space, added a distribution centre, beefed up its tele-sales efforts to SMEs, and started designing and developing its own line of peripherals. However, it has stopped manufacturing its own brand of PC’s, deciding it couldn’t compete with Dell or Compaq. Today, it claims to have nearly 440,000 customers and sales hit £38m in 1997 and £64m this year. Personal Computer World magazine recently voted it ‘Software Supplier of the Year’ for the third year in a row. Founded in 1988, Software Warehouse is headed by Steve Bennett, who left school at age 16. Aged 24 at its founding, he has recruited his competitive sailing buddies to help manage the business.
