It was one of the first British companies to develop and commercialise its own solar power technology, and Solarcentury continues to design new versions of its products for homes and commercial premises. The company was founded in 1999 by Jeremy Leggett, a former geologist and employee of Greenpeace. In the past few years, it has benefited from building regulations that increasingly require energy efficiency and the incorporation of renewable energy technologies. In 2007 the company raised £13.5m from private equity investors, and sales grew 37% a year from £19.4m in 2008 to £50.3m in 2011, with a roughly even split between Britain and the sunnier part of Europe.
