South East Water

Providing about 2.1m customers across Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire with water, this company claims it pumps more than 500m litres along more than 14,000 kilometres of water mains each day—nearly three times the distance from London to Dubai. It was bought from Australian bank Macquarie for £665m in 2006 by Hastings Fund Management and merged with Mid Kent Water in 2007. Hastings injected a further £36m in funding earlier this year to keep the company from breaching its banking covenants. Under managing director Paul Butler, sales in 2009 reached £172.6m.
