Last November Southern Cross’s owner, the private-equity firm Blackstone, completed its purchase of rival operator NHP for £563m, boosting Blackstone’s portfolio in the British care-home market to 450 properties. The larger Southern Cross Healthcare is led by chief executive Philip Scott and had sales of £157.8m in 2004. This caps a run of acquisitions at Southern Cross, including the purchase of 190 homes from its stablemate NHP in February this year. Blackstone is considering an eventual merger of the companies.
