Sir Peter Rigby has turned Specialist Computer Holdings, the Birmingham company he founded in 1975, into an IT services firm supplying big organisations such as the BBC and British Airways with a complete package of support, from hardware and software to technical assistance. Its sales totalled £873m in 2002, a small increase on the previous year, but operating profits were down £7m at £13m. Rigby, who is worth an estimated £490m, also owns Specialist Computers International, which has sales of £673m (see No. 38). The two firms operate as a single entity and after a planned merger would contend for the top 10 in the league table.
