Hailed as Britain’s most trusted optician by Reader’s Digest, Specsavers claims to provide glasses to a third of the nation’s spectacle wearers. Husband and wife Doug and Dame Mary Perkins started the business from the spare room of their Guernsey home in 1984. Since then it has expanded across Britain and Ireland and into the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. It now operates more than 1,370 stores, run in partnership with independent optometrists, and sells hearing aids as well as spectacles and contact lenses. Sales reached £1,181m in the year to February 2009. The Perkins family still own 100% of the company.
