Emission control is driving growth at the Staffordshire firm SPI Materials, which supplies metal components for the motor, health and defence industries in Europe, sourcing them from manufacturers in Asia. Each month tens of millions of SPI parts are installed in vehicle exhaust systems. In defence, the company’s customers include BAE Systems and its parts go into everything from ammunition to missiles. In medicine, it supplies items such as needles and parts for syringes. John Elder and Michael Holt founded SPI in 1998 with £250,000 of their own money, and sales have grown 85% a year from £815,000 in 2002 to £5.1m in 2005.
