Sportsmania is one of a new brand of sports and leisurewear retailers, stocking end-of-range products from well-known companies such as Umbro and Calvin Klein at discount prices. The firm was founded by David Hoskins, Paul Burdett and Beverley Greaves, who set up the first Sportsmania warehouse in Peterborough in 1995. They opened two more before deciding to adopt a franchise model of expansion. The first franchise was set up in Bradford in 1997 and proved so successful that Sportsmania warehouses have been opened in 19 British towns and cities. An ability to ‘buy the right stock at the right prices,’ in Hoskins’s words, and aggressive advertising campaigns have driven up Sportsmania’s sales 92% a year, from £1.6m in 1996 to £11.3m in 1999.
