Househunters staked out this Scottish firm’s office from 4am on a Saturday morning in September, jostling to be at the front of the queue for one of ten £135,000 homes Springfield was about to start building. In addition to its success in the private housing market, housing shortages in northern Scotland have allowed Springfield to establish itself in the affordable housing market and, more recently, to expand into larger properties. It is now funding and building a big commercial project, a £12m development in Elgin. Sales have grown 83% a year from £4.7m in 2003 to £28.8m in 2006.
