This Coventry manufacturer of smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms sells its products in Tesco and B&Q and also supplies Britain’s fire and rescue services. In 2010 an American competitor, BRK Brands, which now has a 29.9% shareholding in Sprue, granted the company the rights to all of BRK’s business in Europe. Led by chairman Graham Whitworth, 59, and co-founder Nick Rutter, 40, the company has thrived as legal requirements to fit smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms have become stricter. Last month Sprue Aegis won a contract to supply British Gas with bespoke carbon-monoxide alarms.
