Yorkshireman Philip Taylor had one clear advantage when he started his accounting software company with £1,000 in 1988. “I am an accountant myself and I design the system I want on my own desk so that it works for other people,” he says. SquareSum has developed its software to be compatible with Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows XP, which was launched last month. And it claims to be the first independent UK software firm licensed to use the “Designed for Windows XP” logo. Its sales have grown 66% a year, from £1.4m in 1998 to £3.9m in 2000.
