SSP operates catering outlets in more than 140 airports and 300 railway stations across 32 countries. It owns a number of familiar brands, including Upper Crust, Caffè Ritazza, Harry Ramsden’s and Millie’s Cookies. It also runs outlets under third-party brands such as Starbucks, Burger King and M&S Simply Food. Formerly part of Compass Group, SSP was bought by the Swedish private-equity firm EQT in 2006. Sales reached £1,426m in 2008 under chief executive Andrew Lynch. The group has been hit hard as the number of train and airline passengers has fallen. EQT reportedly plans to inject a further £100m into the business to encourage lenders to ease their terms.
