Like many other British bookies, Stan James experienced a surge in sales after October 2001, when changes in the taxation of gambling made it profitable to introduce a range of low-margin betting products. With the bulk of its business in telephone sports betting, Stan James started advertising on Sky Sports and says it increased customer numbers from 3,000 in 2001 to 50,000 in 2004. The company was founded by Stephen Fisher and his wife in 1986 and its sales have grown 91% a year, from £35.7m in 2001 to £250.2m in 2004. It has recently agreed a five-year deal to sponsor the 2000 and 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.
