Lal Vekaria, a Kenyan Asian, believes he has one big advantage in the carpentry business – his family hails from the Indian province of Gujarat. Asian carpenters are renowned in London for being good, and the best are said to be from Gujarat. Stanton Interior Solutions was founded by Vekaria in 1989 to supply skilled carpenters to finish jobs started by other firms. The business began to boom four years ago when Laxmanbhai International, a Jersey firm, agreed to back the company, which transformed itself into a subcontractor specialising in fitting out offices and putting up partitions and ceilings. Lately the company has found a good deal of work in fitting out telecoms centres and ‘internet hotels’, where big IT servers are stored. Sales have increased 110% a year from £827,000 in 1997 to £7.7m in 2000, when the company had 25 staff.
