Lal Vekaria had one big advantage when he started his London carpentry business in 1989 – his family comes from Gujarat in India and, as his business partner Gary Davis explains, ‘Asian carpenters are renowned in London for being outstandingly good’. The company was small until 1998 when it found a niche fitting out telecoms centres and internet hotels. Since the telecoms market collapsed in 2000, Stanton Interior Solutions has survived by going back to its joinery roots. Sales have grown 92% a year from £1.6m in 1998 to £11.4m in 2001, when the company employed 26 permanent staff.
