Derbyshire-based Steetley Dolomite processes dolomite stone from its sites in Durham and Derbyshire. More than 1m tonnes of the stone are quarried and heat-treated by the company each year before being exported to mainland Europe, the Middle East, India and southeast Asia, where they are used in furnaces for the production of steel. Formed in 2004 after a management buyout of Lafarge’s lime business in the UK, the company’s international sales under managing director John Carlill have increased 30% a year, from £9.5m in 2009 to £16m in 2011.
