This steel trader was founded by the Oppenheimer family as an Anglo-German joint venture in 1951. The founder’s son, Ralph Oppenheimer, now runs the company. Its core business has been the purchase and sale of steel and raw materials to steel processors and buyers around the globe, but today a good part of the business is providing services such as marketing, finance and logistics to the industry. Rising steel prices have helped to drive up profits 68% a year, from £18.6m in 2003 to £87.8m in 2006.
