Stewart Milne

This firm’s four-storey eco-townhouse, featuring solar panels, turbines, a bike store, home office and a system for recycling water, is one of the first to receive five stars under the government’s policy requiring new homes to be zero-carbon. The Aberdeen group builds homes in Scotland and is moving into northern England following its purchase of Manchester’s Nuttall Construction for around £25m last year. It also supplies timber frames, made at factories in Aberdeen and Oxfordshire. Under founder Stewart Milne, sales jumped by a third to £282.6m in 2006.
