When British Nuclear Group was seeking a repair and maintenance contractor for its Sellafield nuclear plant in 2002 it said it would not tolerate any mistakes. Stobbarts won the contract and holds it to this day. The company was launched by John Stobbart in 1986 and most of its work is in the Cumbria area, where it builds and maintains property for councils and developers. With clients such as British Nuclear Group, the NHS, Cumbria county council and the Environment Agency, sales have increased 66% a year, from an annualised £2.2m in 2001 to £9.8m in 2004.
