SurfKitchen makes software that turns mobile phones into personal computers. It provides a user interface that accesses data services, including ring tones and games, and business applications such as e-mail. Surf Kitchen has 16 customers including O2, which is installing the system as standard on its Smartphone and Java handsets. The Reading company has received £14.8m in funding from private-equity firms such as Add Partners, Accel and Scottish Equity Partners. Sales have grown 108% a year from £310,000 in 2001 to £1.3m in 2003, when the company made a loss. Surf Kitchen’s parent group is registered in America.
