Founder John Palmer built his first construction business to £8m before his bank pulled the plug on his overdraft in late 1990. Six months later he got an offer from the owner of a Swedish firm to bankroll him in a new venture. In a very competitive building market in the North East of England, Tyne and Wear-based Svenska Palmer Construction has achieved rapid growth by employing an efficient Swedish-style building method. Palmer learned the technique while working as a chartered surveyor for ten years in the Middle East. Sales have grown from £715k in 1994 to £4.3m in 1997. The company employs 60 people.
