The building supplies merchant Sydenhams sells timber frames, bricks, tools and kitchen and bathroom fittings to housebuilders such as Taylor Woodrow and Barratts. The family company says that demand for its prefabricated frames, which retain heat well, has grown substantially after the introduction of new regulations on thermal efficiency. Sales have tripled since 1999, when brothers James and Charles Sherborne bought out other family members and brought in new management. Negotiating better terms with suppliers has boosted profits by 49% a year from £1.3m in 2001 to £4.4m in 2004.
