Patrick Naughton started Telecom One with a team of four selling time on other companies’ telecoms networks while he financed the development of his own network.

His focus on a fast-growing niche – he now sells to internet service providers – has driven up sales by 186% a year, from £2.4m in 1998 to £20m in 2000. They are forecast to treble this year.

The firm launched The Dating Channel on Sky Digital last year. Prosodie, the French telecoms carrier, paid £2m in 2000 for an 11.5% stake in Telecom One.
